Nestling among a riot of autumn tints, these gasshô-zukuri houses form an outdoor museum - Hida-no-sato ("the village of Hida"), on the outskirts of Takayama, preserving a rural scene once common in this region.
The name gasshô-zukuri refers to the Buddhist prayer pose, with the fingertips together; basically it means a large-scale roof with timbers forming an inverted V.
