Kômyôji, Kyoto

The main entrance to this temple is a famous spot for autumn colours. ("Fall colors" if you like: Japan is blessed with many of the red maples that remind me more of scenes of New England than of the older England I come from.) The first temple on this site is said to have been founded in 1198, but the current building dates from around 1750.

This night view, with its rich dark textures, makes a puzzle that will present quite a challenge.

Autumn in Shirakawa-go

Late autumn, and ripening persimmons against a varied background of reds, yellows, and evergreens. These gasshōzukuri houses, named after a supposed resemblance between the roof and hands at prayer, were built to house extended families of up to forty people.

Sanzen-in autumn

Like many other of the famous temples of Kyoto, Sanzen-in is not an extrovery showpiece, rather a contemplative haven in beautiful natural surroundings.

The surrounding trees break up the view of the temple building, and the result is a puzzle full of textural variation. An excellent choice for 2016 small pieces...
