Heavenly blade
© Kazuha Fukami

1000: Heavenly blade (Kazuha)

A swirling kimono-clad figure with a drawn sword makes a dramatic picture...

The artist Kazuha Fukami has produced a series of fantasy images of swirling figures, mostly women, some with swords, some not. According to her own website (http://kazuppo.net) she was born in Tokushima (on the island of Shikoku) in June of 198x, and likes polar bears, cows, natural minerals and more.

This is almost certainly a brush name: the family name Fukami means "deep-well", and Kazuha ("ten-thousand leaves") is an alternative reading of the name attached to the famous collection of ancient Japanese poems, Man'yōshū.

The story of Kaguyahime
© Epoch

1000: The story of Kaguyahime (FuziChoco)

A dramatic version of Kaguyahime ("Princess of the shining night") under a moonlit sky. The story of which she is heroine, the "Bamboo cutter's tale", dates back a thousand years, to the great cultural flowering that was the Heian period. In the story, she was found as a tiny baby inside a bamboo trunk.

Good articles at Wikipedia: The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter - Heian period

There is very little biographical detail of this young artist, except that she was born on 30 September 1990 in Chiba (just east of Tokyo), and as of 2012 is studying at Tama Art University while also achieving some commercial success in illustration. She specialises in fantasy themes.

She writes her rather fanciful "brush name" as Fuji, the character for wisteria, followed by choko in hiragana, and writes the whimsical Roman version "Fuzichoco." (She also says she likes sweet food...?)
